Street children. Do you care?

Once a child leaves the family home for whatever reason to live on the street, he is labeled as a street child. The term “Street Children” in a very narrow sense may suggest children such as those popularly known as ‘rag pickers’ in India, ‘parking boys’ in Kenya, ‘Peggy boys’ in the Philippines, ‘pivetes’ in Brazil, ‘pajaro frutero’ in Peru and ‘homeless youth’ or ‘runaways’ in some developed countries (Agrawal, 1999).These children are the causalities of economic woes, war, poverty, loss of traditional values, domestic violence and physical and psychological abuses.

Are you paying Attention???

Guys, I‘ve always heard people giving this advice: “whatever your problems are, leave them at the door”.  Well, I never appreciated this advice until recently when I was caught unawares by my coordinator day dreaming during a training session. Let’s just say I was going through some personal issues. Paying attention is crucial. “The most basic and powerful way to connect to another person is to listen. Perhaps the most important thing we ever give each other is our attention” Rachel Naomi Remen. Guess that’s why coordinator is pissed right now…

LETS WATCH SOME MOVIES. SHALL WE????

7 Fictional Films about Mental Health

Girls surprised during a movie
Films that depict mental health issues often do well at the box office. Some of them, such as One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, go on to win Oscars and become classics. Many people have an interest in films about mental health because they shed light on conditions that many may not understand. Across genres, audiences have been captivated by films with underlying mental health themes ranging from schizophrenia to codependency to psychosis.
Although they may be earnest in their depiction, it is important to note that not every movie that addresses mental health is accurate when it comes to the portrayal of mental health characteristics, and mental health symptoms can vary from person to person. If a movie with a mental health theme piques your curiosity, you can visit GoodTherapy.org’s PsychPedia to learn more about specific conditions. Here are some examples of mainstream fictional films depicting a range of mental health conditions you can watch for information, entertainment, and intrigue.

ITS TODAY ==> World Suicide Prevention Day. !!!!!!!

World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) is an awareness day observed on 10 September every year, in order to provide worldwide commitment and action to prevent suicides, with various activities around the world. The International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP), collaborates with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Federation for Mental Health, to host World Suicide Prevention Day.  The United Nations issued 'National Policy for Suicide Prevention' in the 1990s which some countries use as a basis for their suicide policies.
Suicide has a number of complex and interrelated and underlying contributing factors ... that can contribute to the feelings of pain and hopelessness. Having access to means to kill oneself – most typically firearms, medicines and poisons – is also a risk factor.

Vegetarian diet and mental health

A present study in Berlin, Germany investigated associations between vegetarian diet and mental disorders. Participants were drawn from the representative sample of the German Health Interview and Examination Survey and its Mental Health Supplement (GHS-MHS). Completely vegetarian (N= 54) and predominantly vegetarian (N =190) participants were compared with non-vegetarian participants (N =3872) and with a non-vegetarian sociology-demographically matched sub-sample (N =242).

Vegetarians displayed elevated prevalence rates for depressive disorders, anxiety disorders and somatoform disorders. The analysis of the respective ages at adoption of a vegetarian diet and onset of a mental disorder showed that the adoption of the vegetarian diet tends to follow the onset of mental disorders.

In Western cultures vegetarian diet is associated with an elevated risk of mental disorders. However, there was no evidence for a causal role of vegetarian diet in the etiology of mental disorders. For more information kindly read http://www.ijbnpa.org/content/pdf/1479-5868-9-67.pdf

MYTHS ON DEPRESSION

Blog post courtesy of HUFFING POST.COM

Approximately two out of three people who commit suicide suffer from major depression first. In the past, we have spent more time focusing on suicide than on this dominant root cause. And that's finally changing.
