FUN, FACTS AND EFFECTS OF SLEEP

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SLEEP AND MENTAL HEALTH

According to,Harvard Health Publications , Sleep problems are particularly common in patients with anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Traditionally, clinicians treating patients with psychiatric disorders have viewed insomnia and other sleep disorders as symptoms. But studies in both adults and children suggest that sleep problems may raise risk for, and even directly contribute to, the development of some psychiatric disorders.  Neuroimaging and neurochemistry studies suggest that a good night's sleep helps foster both mental and emotional resilience, while chronic sleep disruptions set the stage for negative thinking and emotional vulnerability.

HENCE:
  • Sleep problems are more likely to affect patients with psychiatric disorders than people in the general population.
  • Sleep problems may increase risk for developing particular mental illnesses, as well as result from such disorders.
  • Treating the sleep disorder may help alleviate symptoms of the mental health problem.

In regard to a recent article in The Daily Nation Sleep is one of the fun moments of some individuals but others do not experience the fun associated with sleep. Did you know that:
   >its imposible to sneeze while asleep
   >humans spend a third of their lives asleep
  >the longest period someone went without sleep is 11 days

Some people find it difficult to fall asleep. Each and everybody has their reasons but the major cause of lack of sleep is mental disturbance.People who visit hospitals or psychiatrists are advised to try and get a lot of sleep because:

 1. Sleeplessness contributes to greater tendency to fall asleep during the day and this lapses may cause mistakes and faults such as medical errors, air traffic mishaps, and road accidents.

2.Sleep is a form of exercise to keep your body healthy. Sleep loss may cause moodiness, inability to concentrate, impatience e.t.c

3. Little or no sleep can leave you too tired to do the things you like doing.

Sleep depreviation casuses deterioration of attention and concentration and causes irritability and other changes in mental functioning.
